Parish Pastor Larry Hartsell obtained bachelors and masters degrees in English from East Tennessee State University. He spent two years in the PhD program for Dramatic Literature at the University of Georgia before heading to Lutheran Theological Seminary in Exile (Seminex) and then Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He served as Pastor in New Bern, N.C., for three years; Chapel Hill, N.C., for 16 years; and here at University Lutheran from 1997 to the present. His mission trips include Mexico (twice) and El Salvador. Larry has also worked as a Boy Scout executive, high school teacher, college teacher, and he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army as a Captain. He enjoys continuing education in counseling and is a community leader in the Stephens Ministry program. Larry and his wife, Pam, have two sons, Jonathan and Caleb; their daughter died 20 years ago. Larry likes to hike, read southern novels and contemporary poetry, watch University of North Carolina basketball and attend Clemson baseball games.


Campus Pastor Chris Heavner received his Bachelors Degree from North Carolina State University and Masters of Divinity from The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He served as Pastor of Bethel Lutheran Salisbury, N.C., 1983-86; Interim Pastor at Roger's Park Lutheran, Chicago, 1986-87; Pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran, Houghton, Mich., 1987-93; and Student Pastor at University Lutheran 1993 to the present. In Clemson he has made a home for himself, becoming heavily involved in the work of Habitat for Humanity and devoting considerable time to the efforts of Clemson University's Martin Luther King Enhance Committee's efforts to advance cooperation between black and white members of the community. Chris and his wife, Laura, have one daughter, Kat, and two sons, Smith and Caleb. His personal interests include woodworking, knitting, sailing and an occasional hiking trip with his children.


Youth Pastor Danielle Shealey graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994 with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education. She taught in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System in North Carolina for seven years while also coaching swimming for the YMCA. Danielle attended Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, which included an internship with University Lutheran before obtaining a Master of Divinity in 2005. When not working, Danielle and her husband, Ben, stay busy raising their two young children, Zachariah and Abigail. In addition to spending time at church and with her family, Danielle enjoys reading, sewing, knitting, painting, swimming and hiking.
